Biography

Using unusual papers and brilliant color palettes, Julie Livingstone Garcia creates vibrant mixed media works in two and three dimensions. Garcia’s work contains elements that are reminiscent of the care free paintings that so many of us made as children, lost in our own thoughts and unabashed in our exploration of color.

Much of her work originates as journal entries on large sheets of watercolor paper. These papers are torn up and reassembled, the original words often indiscernible to the reader. The disjointed pieces are then united to construct the final product. Garcia finds great satisfaction in making order out of the chaos. A painter and an avid reader, she combines her love of books with painting skills to create one of a kind narrative 3-D book sculptures.

Julie Livingstone Garcia went to art school but then enjoyed a successful career as a teacher before ultimately quitting to pursue art full-time. Her work is part of both private and corporate collections throughout the U.S. and in Costa Rica. She has taught her unique approach to sculpture in both museum and gallery settings.
