My books, collages and paper sculptures start as large sheets of paper. I begin writing everything that comes to mind without pause and without editing my thoughts. It is very cathartic to write. I continue this process by painting freely on top of the first layer. Painting is energizing and liberating and I get lost in the process. I find myself layering and pooling paints until the colors become themselves.
Once the papers are dry, I tear them apart and look for interesting pieces to use in the final product. More often than not, the words are dissected or lost. It is very much like writing a letter you’re never going to send. It just feels good to get it all out.
A sense of peacefulness and tranquility comes over me when I am planning and assembling the final product. I think that everyone is engaged in trying to unify pieces and organize their environment. It is exceptionally satisfying to join the fragments together and create a whole cohesive work
